Missouri Pacific donated number 11351 to the city
of Cotter in 1986; it was originally located near Cotter's North
Arkansas Youth Center. During 1989, vandals completely destroyed the
interior and weakened its structure by fire; all windows and doors were
then welded over. It was moved to this location during August of 2001
and was repainted during October 2002.
The original car had four windows on the right side and three on the
left side. It's present paint scheme, location/size of
letters/numbers/heralds, white stripes, buzzsaw heralds and removal of
roofwalk restores the caboose to Missouri Pacific's 1960's Caboose
rebuilding program era.
The year 1948 was the start of the Missouri Pacific steel caboose era.
From 1948 to 1950, Missouri Pacific built 215 steel cabooses to replace
the old wooden types; of these 180 with steel welded sides were built at
the Sedalia shops with 35 with steel riveted sides were built at the
DeSoto, Missouri shops. The exterior paint scheme was a boxcar red with
24" diameter buzzsaw heralds on the sides directly under the herald.
Small numbers may have been placed over the doors. These steel cabooses
were big, roomy and had massive underframes that could take a lot of
abuse; they were to be replaced by the 1971 steel extended vision types
but many were still in service in the late 80's. Most of Missouri
Pacific's standard steel cabooses were rebuilt in the 1960's at Sedalia. |

Rock
Island Caboose 17843
This wood and steel caboose is very unique as its origin dates back to a
1915 era boxcar. Very few exterior, horizontally wood-sheated and
outside steel braced cabooses exist today.
Built or converted by Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad at
their Silvis, Illinois shops in 1944, this was one of 180 cabooses
converted from a 1915 era Class B-2 type boxcar between 1938 and 1944.
During the conversion, the car was shortened by removing a middle
section where the sliding doors were located.
The car's working history from 1944 to 1966 is unknown. It was obtained
by the Mountain Home, Arkansas KTLO Radio Station in 1966 and was on
display at their Highway 5 North location until 2001. KTLO donated the
caboose to be part of the Railroad Memorial. It was moved to this
location during 2001.
The exterior and part of the interior were restored during 2001 and 2002
to the original 1938 - 1944 caboose era style except for replacement of
one window on the right side, four windows and lettering on the left
side plus replacement of a stovepipe and roofwalk. The original caboose
had four left side windows and five right side windows (you are looking
at the right side and the rear is to your left). The restoration
consisted of a new roof, floor, sides, and most of the ends.
The somber boxcar red brown paint, white handrails, Roman lettering, and
location of lettering and heralds conforms to the 1938 - 1944 Rock
Island caboose era. Beginning in 1956 and again in 1970, Rock Island
made several paint schemes, lettering, and lettering size changes on
their cabooses.

Missouri Pacific Caboose 11351
This standard steel welded caboose was built by Missouri Pacific at
their Sedalia, Missouri shops during 1948. It was rebuilt in 1967 and
retired June 1985. It's original number was 1067 but was changed to
13351, then 12351, and then to 11351. |
