Piggott, Clay County
Piggott has a nice court house and other county buildings. Fine high
and public schools, large buildings, five churches, three railroads,
good brick hotel, new, with all modern conveniences, two banks, Bank
of Piggott and the Clay County Bank, two cotton gins, two lumber
yards, numerous large department stores.
Some of our factories
Clay County Mill & Elevator Co., large flour mill, 100 - barrel
capacity, and largest elevator in Clay county. Also large
warehouses, grain, and feed house.
We also have band saw mills, handle factory, hickory mills, stave
factory, hoop factory, spoke and rim factory, largest and best
nursery in the state, to - wit: - The Piggott Nurseries Co.
Piggott is located on the eastern slope of Crowley's Ridge, which
traverses Clay county from north to south and is famous for fine
flavored fruits of all kinds and is well adapted for sheep raising
and live stock, clover, corn, and cotton, etc. West of Crowleys
Ridge lies what is known as Cache and Black River rich bottom lands,
which are fully drained and are being rapidly developed.
To the east of Piggott, and immediately adjacent to Piggott, lies
the celebrated St. Francis Valley, known as one of the richest and
most fertile valleys in the world, the soil of which produces wheat
from 20 to 50 bushels per acre, corn from 40 to 100 bushels per
acre, cotton from 1,000 to 2,500 lbs per acre and clover and timothy
from one to three tons per cutting per acre, and it without doubt
the finest hog and cattle country in the whole Mississippi valley,
leading the entire state in pure bread registered cattle, hogs, and
sheep. Clay county is all white - no negroes in the county.
Less crime, according to court records, in Clay county than in any
county in the state of Arkansas and Missouri. All good white people
are cordially invited to our town. We want good citizens who believe
in education, morality, and the better things of life to come and
locate among us.
