| Notes on Bell Cemetery: |
|
I enjoyed the web photos of the cemetery
very much. Also the photos of the memorial on the courthouse
lawn. Just writing to clear up a little mystery (and mis-spelling)
concerning one of the names on the memorial and on one of the
cemetery markers . . .
Benjamin P. Bell Jr. was my dad and was killed in World War II
(the name you listed in the memorial list was "B.B. Bell Jr."
Not a big deal though, I have a copy of his 1945 obituary in
which he was listed as "B. P. Ball Jr." Which brings me to a
little history concerning the white marble cross with his name
on it in the Bell Cemetery. B. P. was the son of Benjamin P. and
Barbara C. Bell and brother to C. Quenton Bell, Doyle Bell,
Gladys Bell White and the other children born of the marriage of
B.P. and Barbara that died very young. If you look closely at
the pictures showing the "Bell heirs not buried in this
cemetery" you'll notice his name along with his 1915 birth date
and 1945 date of death. He was interred in the Maargraten U.S.
Military Cemetery in the Netherlands and still rests there
today. It always grieved my grandparents, aunts and uncles that
my Mother never had his body moved back "home" so, while a few
of them were still alive, my brother and I decided to have an
exact copy of his WWII military marker made up and placed in the
cemetery. We plan to have a brass plaque made up explaining what
the stark white cross with only a name on it is all about but
haven't gotten around to it yet.
You may have noticed some new fencing around the old church when
the photos were taken. We have an active family group dedicated
to keeping up the old cemetery and also planning some renovation
to the old church.
Keep up the good work. The web site is great!!
B. P. Bell (actually B. P. Bell IV but I go by B.P. Sr.)
