Arkansas Ties ... A Little Bit of This, a Little Bit of That, and a Whole Lot of Arkansas

Desha County, Arkansas Museum       The Sam Terry Log house was built before 1850 of hand hewned cypress logs cut from the Oakwood Bayou. The dog trot helped to ventilate the house in the summer. These are typical living/sitting rooms combined with the bedroom.       The kitchen of a typical log house was separated from the living quarters for 2 reasons: 1.) keep heat from the house 2.) preserve the house in case of fire   Arkansas Indians The Arkansas Indians (the down stream people) a branch of the Quapaw tribe, lived in Desha County. Their presence was first recorded by Marquette and Joliet. French explorers in 1673. They were known as les Beaux Homes. La Salle while among them in 1682 on the south bank of the Arkansas River claimed all the lands west of the Mississippi River for the King of France by the Right of Discovery. A great state and a noble river were named for them.
