Toad Suck Tow Boat

This is the first all metal tow craft made of all new steel used to tow the Toad Suck Ferry barge. It was built about 1939 by Dave H. Ward and was in use until the late 1940's. The craft was powered by a 1033 85-horsepower Ford V-8 engine. The boat is 21 feet long and 5 1/2 feet wide. It was constructed with floatation tanks fore and aft. The metal craft replaced a wooden tow boat.

Restored and Displayed by: Conway Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, June 10, 1979.

Toad Suck Ferry
Arkansas River Crossing
1820 - 1970

Near this point was the site of the Toad Suck Ferry Landing. Ferry service across the Arkansas River was provided here for man, beast, and vehicle. The early type boats were made of wood and pushed by poles; later the boats became mechanized and were constructed of metal. For many years the ferry boats were privately owned, but in later years were state-owned and operated, legend of name stems from saloon that once was located on opposite side of river. Ferry replace by bridge competed in 1970.

Erected by Conway Chamber of Commerce. Faulkner County Historical Society in Cooperation with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
