03/18/1820 Communicated

A Duel was fought on the 10th inst. in the vicinity of this village, between General William O. Allen, a member of the Legislature from this county, and Robert C. Oden, Esq. On exchanging a shot the gentlemen each received a severe wound, which has since proved fatal to Gen. Allen. We are happy to learn that both the gentlemen acted on the ground with the utmost degree of bravery and honor.

Arkansas Gazette - March 1820

03/18/1820 Died - In this place on Tuesday morning last, General William O. Allen. His death was occasioned by a wound in the head, which he received in an affair of honor, which unfortunately took place on the 10th inst. between him and R.C. Oden., Esq. In which both were severely wounded at the first fire. We sincerely regret to see a practice, still continued, which has been universally
condemned by every philanthropic mind. General Allen has left no family to deplore his loss or feel the effects of him imprudence. But how often is it otherwise, that an affectionate wife and family are left in solitude and wretchedness by this one rash act.
