09/08/1821 $50 Dollars Reward

Ran away from the subscriber, from a flat boat lying at the Grand Cut-off on the night of 2nd August, a MULATTO FELLOW, who calls himself, JOHN BIRD. He is 27 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high; lately belonged to Mr. Taylor, of Lousiville. Took with him an olive colored surtout of superfine cloth, half worn, a pair of dark velvet pantaloons, and a rifle.

I have understood that said mulatto fellow was in the custody of some person in the neighborhood of White river, and that the person who had secured him wished to have him forwarded, but that the owner of the boat to whom he applied would not be detained to receive him.

I will give the above reward, if he is delivered to me in New Orleans, or Twenty dollars, and all reasonable costs, if he is lodged in any jail on the Mississippi, so that I can get him again.

On Tuesday morning, the 7th inst. a duel was fought between F.L. Amelong, Esq. Sheriff of this parish, and Capt. Jones, of the United States Army, in which the former fell. The ball fairly blew his brains out, and he may be said to have died on the spot, altho' he breathed for the space of nearly three hours after he was shot. His adversary received no injury.
