Extract of a letter to the Editor, dated "Baton Rouge, March 24,
1823"
Our town exhibits at present more life than usual. The Court Marshal,
for the trial of Col. ARBUCKLE, of the 7th Reg't. Is now in session and
many officers besides himself are here from your Territory, in the
company of whom I have experienced much satisfaction. They present a
very flattering prospect of the future rise and progress of the
Territory of Arkansas, and that at no distant day.
Times are dull here; cotton is very low, which causes the planters to
grumble amazingly and produces considerable embarrassment among them.
Our last advice from Europe gives but very little improvement in prices.
We have some important news of a political nature, respecting France and
Spain and are anxiously waiting for another arrival, to determine the
fate of Spain and rational liberty. May heaven protect her from the
fangs of the Holy Alliance.
