07/01/1823 STOP THE RUNAWAY

RAN AWAY from the subscriber, about the middle of last month, a dark mulatto man named ISAAC, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches in height, branded, with the letter C on one cheek, and with an S on the other, and cropped. Had with him two dogs, one a black and the other a brindle, and has been heard of since he ran away, on the Saline. A reasonable reward will be paid for apprehending said runaway, and returning him to me, living on the Little Missouri on the lower road, in Hempstead County, or securing him in any jail, and giving me information so that I can get him again.

07/15/1823 TAKE NOTICE

ABOUT the first of June, a certain person known by the name of Pleasant Bowy, came into this place, Long Prairie, Hempstead county, A.T. with the following property, viz. ---- A negro man, who calls himself Joe, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches in height; has a large scar on his left arm, caused by a burn. Also, two Horses, one a bay, about eight years old, fourteen and a half hands high; the other a sorrel, about the same age, and height - no brands perceivable on either. The Negro says that the above property belonged to James Cooper, who was murdered by the said Bowy, between this and the Sabine. The said Bowy was apprehended, but broke custody, escaped about 9th June. Cooper's pocket book, and clothes supposed to be his, were found in the possession of Bowy.

Any person having a legal claim to the said property, is requested to come forward and prove it, pay charges, and take it away.

07/22/1823 FATAL DUEL --- We learn from a gentleman direct from St. Louis, that a
duel was fought on Monday last, near this place, between Mr. Thomas
Rector and Joshua Barton, Esq. - United States Attorney for the Missouri
district, which result in the death of the latter gentleman. It is stated that
Mr. Barton received his antagonist's ball to the breast, and expired in about
a minute. We understand that a publication in the Missouri Republican,
signed Philo, arraigning the Office conduct of William Rector, surveyor of
the public lands in the states of Illinois and Missouri and Territory of Arkansas,
gave rise to this horrid affair. We forbear to comment until we hear the
particulars, when we shall treat the subject as we may think it deserves. [Patriot]
