Died - At Batesville, on the 1st inst. of an inflammation of the
stomach, Maj. Joseph Taylor, late a resident of Cynthiana, Kentucky.
This gentleman emigrated to our Territory about four months since, with
a view of a permanent residence among us, and from every information we
have gained, he was esteemed by all who knew him. He possessed an
extensive knowledge of the science of law, and had he lived, would
probably, at some future day, have filled some judicial situation in our
Territory. He was interred with Masonic honors, by some of the members
of the fraternity at Batesville, who have resolved to wear crape for one
month in token of their respect for the memory of the deceased.

TEN DOLLARS REWARD
BROKE from the jail of this county on Wednesday night last, a Negro
woman named CELIA, committed to Jail by the Sheriff of Pulaski County
under an attachment. She is a large likely woman, inclined to be fat,
black complexion, no particular marks remembered. She was lately the
property of Walter Webber, (a Cherokee) and will, in all probability
make for the nation. She is supposed to have went away in company with
two Negro men belonging to said Webber. Any person returning said Negro
woman, shall receive the above reward.

TO THE PUBLIC
CIRCUMSTANCES have occurred, in my late application to the Legislature
for a divorce from my present wife, Milly D. Gibson, that renders it
necessary for me, in this way, to combat them. It seems, a certain man
on board a steam-boat, while wooding at Helena, stated to Colonel Daniel
Mooney, and a Mr. Hunt, that I had got a considerable property by my
wife, which I spent, and then deserted her, and from time to time had
drawn on her for money. All these accusations are base, false, and the
product of malicious envy. Whoever the fellow may be, I pronounce him to
be a liar, and a villian. If he has the least spark of spirit or honor,
he will not conceal his name, and endeavor to substantiate his charges
against me. I appeal to all those who are acquainted with the
circumstances of my marriage, for the justification of my character in
this respect. This scoundrel would not merit the smallest notice from
me, were it not for the influence it has had upon the minds of some
worthy men.

TO THE PUBLIC
BENJAMIN L. MILES, having published a handbill under date of October
8th, 1823 addressed to me, filled with falsehood and misrepresentation,
I request the public to suspend their opinion on that subject until the
truth or falsity of his statements are investigated in a judicial
tribunal. The subscriber having taken measurements to give Miles an
opportunity of proving all his charges if true, he therefore deems it
improper to answer those charges at this time.
