MARRIED - At Fourche de Thomas, Lawrence County, A.T. on the 26th

Davidsonville, to Miss Sarah Lindsey, daughter of Mr. Caleb Lindsey, of
the former place.

DIED - At the house of Mr. James H. Martin, on the north side of the
Arkansas, opposite this place, on Saturday night last, Mr. Samuel
Faulkner, aged about 30, late mate of the Steam-boat Spartan and
recently of Pittsburgh. He came up two or three weeks ago, from the
Mississippi, in a state of great debility, produced by a recent illness
of several weeks duration, at the mouth of the White River.

|
|
08/09/1825 |
DIED - In this place, at 11 o'clock on Sunday night last, after an
illness of only five days, Mr. BARTHOLOMEW ENNALLS, of the firm Muir &
Ennalls, Merchants, of this place, aged about 23 years.
Mr. Ennalls was a native of Cambridge, Maryland, where, we understand,
his mother, and other relatives reside. He had been a resident of our
town only about three months, having recently emigrated from Baltimore,
where he was bred to the mercantile business - but during his short stay
among us, by his uniform correct moral deportment, and pleasing and
engaging manners, he had gained the friendship and esteem of all who
were acquainted with him - and all deplore in him, the loss of a
promising and amiable young man, who bade fair to become a useful
citizen, and a worthy member of society.
For some time past, during the late warm weathers, he had been busily
engaged packing up goods, and dispatching them for Hempstead County,
where they contemplated locating a branch of their establishment; and
intended to have set out to take charge of it, on Wednesday morning
last. But on that morning he was attacked by a violent illness,
produced, no doubt, by the fatigue and anxiety of mind which he had
recently undergone - and, instead of undertaking the journey which he
had in contemplation, he, who, one week since, was apparently in
excellent health and fine spirits, had been cut off in the flower of
youth, in the midst of the most flattering prospects, and is now a
tenant of the cold and silent grave.
It may be consoling to, and assuage the grief of his afflicted mother
and surviving relatives, to learn, that, although he died among
strangers, the utmost dare and attention was paid to him during his
illness, and every mark of respect shown to his remains, which it was in
the power of his friends to bestow.

A SULPHER SPRING has recently been discovered in the Quapaw Purchase
about five or six miles from this place, which has already been visited
by a number of persons, some of whom remain there for the purpose of
using its waters, and several others are preparing to visit it from this
place. If the use of its waters prove as beneficial as is anticipated by
those who have visited it, it will soon become a place of considerable
resort. The distance to it is only a pleasant morning's ride, which
alone will be conducive to health, whether those who visit it derive any
benefit from drinking its waters or not.

A PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE TERRITORY OF ARKANSAS
WHEREAS, representations have been made to me, that white people are in
the habit of trespassing on the Indian Country, for the purpose of

the United States: -
Therefore, I, GEORGE IZARD, Governor of the Territory of Arkansas, and
Superintendent of Indian Affairs, in order to prevent the difficulties
which are daily arising by the Indians and whites trespassing on the
lands of each other, and to maintain peace between them, do order each
party to confine themselves within their own boundaries, under the
penalties prescribed by law.
And the Commandants of Regiments of Militia in the several Counties in
this Territory, and all Subordinate Officers, are required to aid in
carrying this order into effect.

Epitaph
Reader, I've left this world, in which
I had a world to do;
Sweating and fretting to get rich,
Just such a fool as you.
Honesty
Be honest, and 'tis clear as light,
You'll make by far most money by't
The profits that are got by cheating,
Are very few and very fleeting.
Experience proves the adage true,
Then never lose it from your view.

Attempt to Commit Murder
The following anonymous letter was received by last Saturday's Southern
mail. As it bore no signature, and not being acquainted with the hand
writing of the writer, we immediately determined, as is invariably our
custom in all such cases not, to publish or take any notice of it
whatever, until convinced of its correctness by authority which we could
rely on. But, on making inquiry of a respectable person, direct from
Miller County, where the transaction took place, we have ascertained
that it is correct in all its particulars - that Cheek, who had
attempted to take the life of the Commandant of Cantonment Towson, had
not been arrested, but was lying out in the woods, as was said, armed
with three guns, a brace of pistols, a butcher knife, and a club,
setting the civil authorities at defiance, and threatening to kill any
person who should attempt to take him. He is said to be a resolute and
desperate character, and will no doubt attempt to carry his threats into
execution, if his lurking place should be discovered by his pursuers.
Fort Towson, August 18th, 1825
Sir - An atrocious murder was attempted in the vicinity of this
garrison, on Saturday last. The circumstances are briefly as follows:
The Commanding Officer of this Post, Capt. Hyde, while attending the
trial of a man, named Jesse Cheek, prosecuted for furnishing the
Soldiers of this garrison with spirituous liquor, was assaulted, in open
court, by the prisoner, who struck him repeatedly with a club, with
which he came armed, for the purpose, as he said of murdering the
prosecutor. This he nearly effected. He was taken into custody - fined
fifteen dollars, and then discharged! A warrant has since been obtained,
but the villain absconded. As I understand his intention is to proceed
to Little Rock, I wish you to give the foregoing and following facts an
insertion in your paper, in order that he may be apprehended and brought
to justice.
The said Cheek is about 5 feet 10 inches high, has a sandy complexion
and downcast look. He was formerly a pedlar in St. Louis, but left that
place with a considerable quantity of goods entrusted to him for sale,
and never returned.
My name, if you think necessary, will be furnished at any time, on
application, by letter, directed to this Post.
[The author of the foregoing letter, is requested to communicate his
name to the Editor]
