MURDER!
On Friday morning last, about 9 o'clock, as Mr. Thomas Whittington was
entering the store of Mr. A.W. Cotton (while the latter was absent) in
company with a man by the name of Elder, a rifle was discharged from the
inside, the contents of which, after grazing the abdomen of Elder,
entered the right hip of Mr. Whittington, and came out on the opposite
side. Medical aid was immediately procured, but the wound was soon
discovered to be mortal, and the unfortunate man lingered in the most
excruciating pain, until Saturday night, when death closed his
sufferings.
A Coroner's inquest was held on the body, on Sunday morning, and, after
examining testimony, the jury returned a verdict of MURDER against Allen
Cotton, a lad of only 14 or 15 years of age, a brother of the owner of
the store.
It appears, from what we can learn, that the rifle was aimed at Elder,
between whom and young Cotton an altercation had taken place a few days
previous. After the last affair Elder immediately left town, but we
understand he was pretty severely though not dangerously wounded, the
ball having nearly buried itself in his flesh as it passed across his
abdomen. No previous misunderstanding existed between Mr. Whittington
and young Cotton, but on the contrary, they had uniformly been on the
most friendly terms.
We forbear making any further comments. - The unhappy youth, charged
with the murder, has been committed to jail, in this place, to await his
trial at the next term of the Superior Court, for this rash and
imprudent act.
Mr. Whittington was about 30 years of age - by occupation a shoemaker -
and was a quiet and peaceable citizen. He has left a widow in indigent
circumstances, to lament the sudden death of a kind and affectionate
husband and protector.

PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR
INFORMATION having been given to me, that a barbarous MURDER has been
committed on the person of KAHEPA, an aged Quapaw Indian, formerly
residing near the bank of the river Arkansa, opposite to Richland
Township, in Arkansas County, by vagabond Red-Skins, who have infested
that neighborhood for some time, I hereby promised a reward of ONE
HUNDRED DOLLARS for the apprehension and deliver, at the Jail in the
Town of Little Rock, of the principal perpetrator of the crime; and of
FIFTY DOLLARS for each of the abettors or accessories in the nefarious
act, on conviction. And all Officers of this Territory, Civil, and
Military, are enjoined to spare no pains to secure and bring to condign
punishment the murderers. A certain Charley or Charlotty, a Creek
Indian, suspected of having been concerned in the murder of a Mr. Hart,
in the Cherokee Country, is believed to have been one of those engaged
in this wicked action; his apprehension is peculiarly required.
Given under my hand at Little Rock, The 21st day of October, A.D.,1825.
