Orleans, in connection, with their house in this place, for the purpose
of transacting a general agency and commission business, under the firm

INDIAN ROBBERY
We learn by a gentleman from Crawford County, that a party of hunters
from the neighborhood of Fort Smith, in the employ of a Mr. Gray, of
that vicinity, have recently been robbed, on the south side of the Red
River, by a large party of Pawnee Indians, who took all their horses,
guns, ammunition, peltries, &c. leaving them nothing but the clothes on
their backs, and even stripped one of the party entirely naked, who
suffered very much from the excessive heat of the sun, and was
shockingly blistered when he reached the settlements. Mr. Gray's loss is
said to be $500 or $600.
It appears that this party were hunting on the Indian lands, and not
only without their permission, but without any license from government,
a practice, which they must know is in direct violation of the laws of
the United States. Under these circumstances they can expect but little
sympathy for their misfortunes, from their fellow-citizens; and no
indemnity for their losses from the Indians who committed the robbery.
While our hunters persist in intruding on Indian lands, and destroying
the game which is their only support, and in open violation of the laws
of their country, they must look for retaliation and robbery, whenever,
they shall be fallen in with, on their incursions by the injured party.
Although we can by no means justify the Indians in committing
depredations on our traders, properly licensed as such, and would go as
far as any in demanding their punishment for such aggressions, yet,
justice requires us to say, that the Indians have rights too, and that
they ought to be respected, and that the laws of the U. States, for the
regulation of trade and intercourse among the Indians, ought to be
rigidly enforced against all who violate them.
As connected with this subject, we would call the attention of our
readers, and particularly those in the habit of hunting on Indian lands,
to the Proclamation of the Governor of this Territory, prohibiting all
such intrusions, which has been published in this paper for several
weeks past.

LITTLE ROCK TAVERN
It gives us pleasure to state, that this establishment (which has, for
some time past, to the great injury of our town, been unoccupied) has
been rented to Mr. Nicholas Pee, late of Shelbyville, Ky., who
contemplates having it ready in the course of a few days, for the
reception of Boarders and Travellers. During the time the Tavern has
been unoccupied, it has underwent very considerable repairs, which will
render it very commodious and comfortable; and we feel assured, that its
respectable and enterprising landlord will spare no pains or labor, to
give general satisfaction to those who may favor him with their custom.

NOTICE
ALL persons indebted to me, are requested to make immediate payment, as
I expect to start to the upper part of the county in a short time. A
failure to attend to this request, will place me under the disagreeable
necessity of bringing suits without discrimination, as I stand in need
of each to meet my own contracts. All persons interested, who do not pay
me before I start, will find their accounts in an officer's hands for
collection, as it is not in my power to give further indulgence.
