A man by the name of ISAAC RENFRO, who was some months since
apprehended in Missouri, on a charge of Murder, and committed to jail,
from which he made his escape, and was advertised by the Sheriff of
Cooper County, was recently taken up in Chicot County in this Territory,
and brought to this place and lodged in jail by the Sheriff of that
county, and information thereof immediately communicated by the Governor
of this Territory to the Governor of the State of Missouri. After
remaining in jail a few days, he was taken before a magistrate, on a
writ of habeas corpus, and there being an almost entire absence of proof
against him here, he was, after a hearing, discharged.

General Orders
Arkansas Territory
Head Quarters, Little Rock,
January 26th 1826
Brig. Gen. William Bradford, of the Arkansas Militia, will please to
inform the Commandants of Regiments, in the counties from which no
returns have been received, that, unless the orders on that subject are
promptly attended to, their Commissions must be returned to the Adjutant
General's Office at Little Rock.
The actual force of this Territory may not be immediately called out for
the public service, but it is essential for the safety and credit of the
community that it should be in a state of preparation; and the higher
the military grade of the Officers, the more indispensable is their
attention to the instructions issued by the Executive authorities.
Thomas W. Newton is appointed a 1st Lieutenant of the 2d (or Pulaski
County) Regiment.
By Order of the Governor;
A.H. Sevier, Aid de Camp

Raft of Red river - We feel much
pleasure in stating, that Capt. Birch and Lieut. Lee, with about 50 U.S.
Soldiers, left Natchitoches, Lou. on the 9th ult. for the purpose of
examining the Great Raft of Red river, and making an estimate of the
cost of removing the obstructions which interrupt its navigation.
The late period at which they commenced their labors, will not, we
apprehend, allow them time to complete them and make their report
sufficiently early for it to be acted upon during the present session of
Congress.

seen a letter from Mr. C. stating that the proposed District would
embrace the country on our western frontier, to include Lovely's

Shameful Outrage!
On Thursday night last, several disorderly and drunken characters
collected in this place, for the purpose of creating a riot; and after
pressing or inveigling into their service a number of peaceably disposed
persons, who were not aware of their base and scandalous intentions, and
compelling several boys to fall into their ranks, paraded through the
streets in a shameful and tumultuous manner, uttering the most horrid
and blasphemous oaths, and rendering the air with loud and vulgar
imprecations, to the great annoyance of the citizens. They continued to
conduct in this manner for some time, when they drew up their forces in
front of the residence of one of our most respectable citizens, (where a
party of ladies and gentlemen were assembled) and commenced beating a
drum and blowing a horn, and making a variety of other discordant
noises, with the evident intention of disturbing or breaking up the
party; and not satisfied with that, some two or three worthless
vagabonds among them showered a volley of stones and brick-bats at the
windows, which happily did no other injury than breaking a few panes of
glass. Being satisfied, perhaps, with the disturbance which they had
created, the mob now drew off to a neighboring grog-ship, where they
kept up their drunken revelry till a late hour of the night.
The leaders of this violent assemblage, we are happy to say, are well
known, and we sincerely hope they will be made to answer for their
shameful conduct at the bar of justice. No apology can atone for such
lawless proceedings. They are not only disgraceful to the authors, but
they cast a lasting stigma on the character of our town; and it behooves
every citizen, who feels the least respect for himself, for his family,
or for the reputation of the town in which he resides, to use every
lawful and honorable means to suppress them, by treating the authors and
abettors with the scorn and contempt which they merit from an injured
and insulted community. |
