30 DOLLARS REWARD
STOLEN,
FROM the subscriber, living near Edwardsville, Ill. On the night of the
21st September last, a deep bay Horse, five feet high, one or both hind
feet white up to the fetlock, a white stripe in his forehead, about a
fingers length in width, six years old last spring, is a work horse -
low carriage but trots rough - had, when stolen, a heavy mane and tail.
The subscriber got on the track of the horse and thief, and pursued them
as far as Henry County, Tennessee, on the Obine River, where he could
get no farther information. The thief's name is
NATHAN THOMPSON,
But he changed it at one place on the route in which he was pursued. He
is about 25 years old, 6 feet 2 or 3 inches high, well built, will weigh
from 180 to 200, rather dark complexion, with very gray eyes and black
curly hair - stern countenance - His left thumb has been cut lengthwise
from the nail to a little below the joint, so as to make the joint next
below the nail, stiff, and the thumb bent a little - his left fore
finger shows that is has been very much mangled, (he says in a cotton
gin) and the end of the middle finger a little injured. He has a very
deep scar on his right leg, extending from near his ankle joint about
six inches upwards, on the outside of his leg. He has some farther marks
not well recollected. He was talking much of the Spanish Territories, as
though he intended going there, but it is supposed he has no such
intention. He is a native of Kentucky. It is rather supposed, from some
circumstances, that he has gone to the Cherokee Purchase, or perhaps
into some part of Alabama.
The above reward will be given for the apprehension and confinement of
the thief, so that I can bring him to justice; and a handsome additional
reward will be given for the horse.

From Niles' Weekly Register, December 3, 1825
Com. Macdonough - This distinguished officer died on the 10th ult. on
board the brig Edwin, arrived at Philadelphia from Gilbraltar, as he was
returning home. His son and physician were with him. He had long been
much indisposed; his disease was a pulmonary consumption. He has left
four sons and one daughter. The commodore was a very amiable and pious
man, as well as a brave and intelligent seaman - remarkable for the
mildness of his manners and yet peculiar for his enforcement of
discipline. His body has been forwarded to Middletown, Con. for
interment by the side of the remains of his wife. The shipping of the
different ports of the United States, as the news of his decease reached
them, displayed their colors half-mast.
When the body of the commodore arrived at New York, the flags on the
shipping were hoisted half-mast an extra meeting of the city council was
held, and certain resolutions passed, among them one requesting a
detachment of troops to perform military honors to the remains of the
hero, which request was promptly and fully complied with.

SMALL POX - Considerable alarm has recently been excited here and
elsewhere, in consequence of the small pox having been lately brought to
the village of Arkansas, by a person from New Orleans, (where it was
raging with great violence, and carrying off a great number of victims,
as late as the beginning of this month.) We are happy to have it in our
power to state, on the authority of a letter from Arkansas, received by
last Sunday's mail, that the person, who had been confined there with
the small pox, has recovered and left the place. The letter makes no
mention of the disease having been communicated to any other person.
|
| 01/31/1826 |
ANOTHER STEAM-BOAT LOST - The steam-boat Rufus Putnam, Capt. Culver,
sank in the Mississippi, near Point Chicot, in the early part of this
month, in consequence of running on a snag, and knocking a large hole in
her bottom. She filled and went down in a few minutes after the accident
happened. Some of the machinery, and a considerable portion of the
cargo, were saved, but mostly in a damaged state. The boat is supposed
to be entirely lost.

|
| 01/31/1826 |
SMALL POX - We are sorry to learn, that the person who recently
brought the small pox to the Post of Arkansas, from New Orleans, died at
the former place last week. No new case had occurred when our informant
left there, and it was believed that the disease had not been
communicated to any other person in the village.

A report has been in circulation here for several days, that a person
was ill with the small pox in Richland township in the upper part of
Arkansas county; but we are glad to learn, from a gentleman who arrived
from that vicinity on Sunday last, that the report is entirely
groundless - no symptoms of the disease had appeared in the person
alluded to.
