pursuant to the sentence of the Court, for murder, some time since,
of his mistress, Mrs. Hillhouse.

Fire - We sincerely regret to
learn, that, on Sunday, 18th ult. the Stable of Hewes Scull, Esq. at
Post of Arkansas, was set on fire and entirely destroyed, together
with about 40 loads of hay and oats which it contained. There were
four horses in it when the fire was discovered, which were rescued
by the exertions of the citizens, but not until a large portion of
the hair had been singed from their bodies. Suspicion fixed on one
of Mr. Scull's female slaves as the author of the fire, and he had
her apprehended and taken before a magistrate; but after an
investigation of two days, she was released for want of sufficient
evidence to commit. Circumstances, however, are so much against her,
as to convince, Mr. Scull of her guilt, and he keeps her confined in
irons with the intention, we understand, of sending her out of the
Territory.
Mr. Scull has been truly unfortunate in having his property
destroyed by fire - having suffered in the same way once or twice,
at least before - and every time, we believe, by the hand of an
incendiary.

IMPORTANT!
ANY person knowing anything of Edwin L. Harris, formerly a Judge of
the County Court of Wilcox County, Alabama, will do him a service by
giving such information to the Editor of the Courier, printed at
Selma, Alabama. Judge Harris left Wilcox County, in the winter of
1825, and, it is understood, married in Virginia - since, then his
friends here have not heard from him. Knowledge of his present
residence would be productive of much benefit to him.

OBITUARY
DIED - At Cantonment Gibson, on the last day of December 1831 of
Pneumonia, John Nicks, Sutler for the 7th Infantry, in the 50th year
of his age, after an illness of ten days duration. Gen. Nicks, was
born in the State of North Carolina. At the augmentation of the
Army, in 1808, he entered the military service, with the rank of
Captain, and left it with that of Lieut. Colonel, at the last
reduction in 1821. From that time till his decease, he held the
appointment of Sutler to the 7th Reg. on the Arkansas River, during
which period he also sometimes represented the people of Arkansas,
in the Territorial Legislature. Into whatever relation he entered,
whether that of citizen, legislator, or soldier, Gen. N. always
carried with him talents adequate to the discharge of his duties,
and an energy of character which impelled to their immediate
execution. His mind, of a rather brilliant order, was above the
usual standard of intellect, but the strongest and most admirable
trait of his character, was that of a fixed and unbending integrity.
His loss will long be a subject of regret in this community, and his
departure hence to be no more here, deeply lamented by his surviving
and afflicted family.
His remains were interred the day after his decease, with the honors
due his former military rank, and the service appointed for the
Protestant Episcopal Church, for the burial of the dead, was read at
his grave. - Communicated.
