OBITUARY
Departed this life, at Arkansas Post, on the 31st inst., in the 25th
year of her age, Mrs. Emily E. consort of Col. James Smith. In the
death of Mrs. Smith, the society in which she lived has sustained a
deep and irreparable loss. To those who knew her best, who have
shared her hospitality and who have witnessed the kind, affable, and
truly benevolent manner in which she performed all the duties of a
wife, a friend, and member of society, it is unnecessary to offer
eulogy to her memory. The tears and sorrowful hearts which followed
her to the grave, and closed around her the dark veil of the tomb,
gave sufficient proof of the estimate in which she was held by her
friends and neighbors. Mrs. Smith was a truly kind, obliging friend
and neighbor, always dispensing her favors with a cheerful and will
hand to the poor and needy; and with all these virtues concentrated
in her character, she was a kind, affectionate, and devoted wife.
She bore her affliction with that meek and pious resignation which
characterizes the Christian; and when about to expire, she called
her husband and surrounding friends to her couch, and bade them a
long adieu. After embracing her husband, and bearing testimony to
the kind and affectionate treatment she had uniformly received from
him, she expired in his arms.

At a meeting held in Carrollton, Carroll
county, on the 26th Dec. inst., by a large and respectable portion
of the citizens of said county, the following preamble and
resolutions were unanimously adopted:
Whereas, it is a principle in all representative governments, that
the representative should represent truly, and the the best of his
judgment, the interest of his constituents.
And whereas, when the representative ceases, either from ignorance
or design, to represent the interest of his constituents, he ceases
virtually to be the representative for those who confided in him.
And whereas, it is a fundamental principle in our free government,
that the will of a majority is the supreme law of the land, if
follows, that the express will of a majority, should, in all cases,
bind the representative.
Wheras, the Hon. C.R. Sanders, (Senator from the counties of
Carroll, Marion, and Izard), in the opinion of this meeting, has
been guilty of a flagrant violation of his duty as Senator in the
last legislature of the State of Arkansas.
Therefore, be it resolved, That a committee of six be appointed to
prepare an address to the said C.R. Sanders, and that he be
requested to resign said office of Senator.
And be it further resolved, That said committee be invested with
full power to and perform all things touching this matter, so as
best to accomplish the object of this meeting.
And it is farther resolved, That J.D. Blair, Alexander Smith, A.M.
Wilson, Wm. C. Mitchell, Tho's H. Clark, and Richard Roberts, are
appointed to make out an address to said C.R. Sanders.
And further resolved, That the whole proceeding of this meeting be
published in the Arkansas Gazette at Little Rock.

By the proceedings of a meeting held in
Carrollton, published in another part of this paper, we perceive
with regret, that a portion of the constituents of Mr. Sanders, of
the Senate, have found fault with one of his votes in relation to a
purely local question. It is only a portion of the three counties
composing his district, which has objected to his course. We
entertain no doubt, however, but what he will be able to give his
fellow citizens just and reasonable grounds for his vote on the
question of boundary. In other respects, it is with pleasure that we
can assert that the course of Mr. Sanders, during the last session
of the Legislature, was republican, independent, and honorable - and
we express a confident hope that he will be prepared to give
satisfactory explanations to the good people of Carroll county. |

FROM THE WEST
Fort Gibson, 10th Dec., 1836
My Dear Sir - Ye-poth-te-ho-lo has arrived at this place, and there
is to be no war, nor rumors of war. - The two chieftans, Ye-poth-lo-ho-lo
and Rolly McIntosh, with their principal men, met yesterday - all
was pacific. The pipe of peace was puffed, and a glass of old rye,
(perhaps new corn) kindly drank by all to commemorate their union.
The emigrating people will remain here until all the stragglers have
arrived, (8 or 10 gangs), when they will separate and select for
themselves, each their favorite portions of their new country, and
occupy it without a murmur - unless there should be a deficiency in
the supplies promised them by the Government, which I do not
anticipate.
We expect the 1st Regiment of Arkansas volunteers here in a few
days. They will necessarily be compelled to occupy tents during
their stay, which will be until the expiration of their term of
service (6 months). The companies are now at this place appear quite
at home; in fact, I think they would be satisfied for much longer
time than their present term of service particularly the officers,
many of whom are very clever fellows; and I feel particularly
gratified that the officers of the regular army at this post, treat
them with much attention." |

We forgot to mention, at the proper time,
the arrival, a week or two since, of Major Lee, U.S.A., to whom has
been confided, by the Secretary of War, the duty of selecting a site
for the erection of an Arsenal at or near this place.
Captain M.W. Bateman, U.S.A., arrived at this place, a day or two
ago, on his return from superintending the removal of one of the
large parties of emigrating Creek Indians, who passed through this
state, a few weeks since, for their new homes in the west. |

A NEW BOAT - The De Kalb, commanded by
Capt. Lemon, a neat and elegant new boat, built expressly for the
Arkansas trade, made her first appearance in our waters on Saturday
last. On the morning of the 21st, the Captain invited our citizens
to take a little excursion up the river with him, and to take a
glass of champagne. Having satisfactory proof of the speed of the
boat, and excellence of her accommodations, we can recommend her to
public patronage.
While on board, the Captain prepared a handsome collection for us -
and the Commander, we think will never forget to remember that the
Gazette office was pretty formidably represented on the occasion,
from the printer's Devil up to the editors, bearing a hand in such a
conflict, like Homer's Heroes, all of whom were fearful at a feast!
If he should require our assistance on another occasion, we promise
him to bring a full team! |

To the Editor of the Arkansas Gazette:
SIR - In a recent number of your paper, "John Speer" has published a
communication, purporting to be an answer to my defense, published
in your paper a short time since, but which is in fact an evasion of
the issue between us. Knowing himself to be guilty of the charges
which are against him, and which he has so solemnly and equivocally
denied, he now seeks to shield himself from public indignation and
contempt, by charging me with the commission of acts, which are as
derogatory to the character of a gentleman as those of which he
himself is guilty. I am at all times prepared to defend myself
successfully against the poisoned slanderer. I am well known to the
citizens of the county in which I reside, and nothing that John
Speer can say, will have any effect upon that community. He is a
common disturber of the peace and quiet of the neighborhood in which
he live - a news carrier, a yellow tongued slanderer, a defamer of
private character, and a man destitute of the attributes of a
gentleman. In relation to the slanderous charges he has published
against me, I have only to say, that I can settle my own affairs
with my neighbors without his officious interference. The charge of
my having sworn about Bidder's preemption claim, is false and
destitute of truth. If this man Speer can say the name in relation
to all the oaths which he has taken about preemption claims, he must
be a fortunate man. I have no disposition to expose his character,
or to prefer charges against him. If I had, perhaps I might say
something about good fat beeves, which would make John Speer feel a
little curious.
But to the horse story. On the night that the traveler's horse was
stolen from my stable, John Speer has admitted that he was at my
ferry until a late hour of the night, and from there, he went to Mr.
Thomas Wilson's and stayed the balance of the night. After this the
stolen horse was found in the possession of John Speer did procure
his servant, or some other person, to personate Williams, alias
Kerr, the murderer of Dickson, at and about his house, in order to
give him a chance to make his escape, and to screen him from the
punishment which the law had meted to his offence; and I have no
doubt that through the low timing and management of John Speer, that
the murderer of Dickson made his escape from justice.
