In this city, on Saturday last, Miss Maria E. Thorn, sister of Col.
Thomas Thorn, and formerly of New Jersey, aged about 34.
In this township, on the 25th Dec., Ann Dodd, aged 6 years, daughter of
Mr. George W. Dodd; and on the 26th Dec., Mr. George W. Dodd, aged about
35 years.
In the Cherokee Nation, West, on the 8th December, Capt. John Stuart,
7th Regiment U.S. Infantry, after an illness of five weeks.
On the 4th of December in Pyeatt township, Mr. David Cumban, aged 21
years. |

ELECTION NOTICE
PURSUANT to law, there will be held, at the Mayor's Office, in the city
of Little Rock, Arkansas, on the 1st Monday in January 1839, an election
for city officers to wit:
One Mayor, to be a free-holder, and a resident of the city one year
previous to the election, and of the age of thirty years.
One City Recorder, who is to be ex-officio Treasurer thereof.
One City Constable, who is to be Collector of the city taxes and
overseer of the streets.
Eight Aldermen, who are to be free-holders, and of the age of thirty
years.

House and Lots to Rent
A House and two lots of ground suitable for a garden in the upper part
of the town, on the street leading to the Arsenal, below the residence
of Dr. Howell, are offered to rent for the term of six months, and
perhaps for a longer period. The house contains eight rooms, Kitchen,
&c. and on the premises is a good well of water. The whole is in good
order and possession, will be given in a short time. Apply at the office
of the
Gazette, or at the office of the Register of the Land Office.

John W. Daniels, will make selections of land for purchasers, locations
of Spanish Claims or attend to Surveying of any denomination, in the
District of lands subject to sale at Little Rock and Washington,
Arkansas. He will also attend to forwarding the evidence of such claims
as require the set of Congress for confirmation, pay taxes on Lands of
non-residents in the above limits, &c.

LITTLE ROCK ACADEMY
THE Trustees of the Little Rock Academy announce to the community that
the Seminary for Young Ladies will commence its first session on Monday
the 7th instant, in the School House adjoining the Methodist Meeting
House.
The scholastic year will comprise two sessions of five months each, and
the price of tuition will be as follows:
Orthography, Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, per session - $10.00
Grammar, Geography, and History, with Maps and Globes - $15.00
Natural and Moral Philosophy, Rhetoric and Composition - $20.00
Astronomy, Chemistry, and Botany - $25.00
Plain and Ornamental Needle Work, extra - $10.00
French - $20.00
Music, with the use of the piano - $20.00
Drawing - $20.00
For fuel and stationery an extra charge will be made.

NOTICE
ALL persons indebted to the late firm of Danley & Gossin, are warned
against paying any regard to an advertisement of Gossin's in the Times
and Advocate, in which he warns those indebted not to settle without his
consent, and also expresses a determination not to pay any more of the
debts due by the late firm. He has never paid any debts of the firm, nor
does he posses the means to pay them. So from from his paying debts, he
has collected a large amount of the debts due, and squandered them, of
which he has takenon account on the books of the shop. I am the only
person who is authorized to receive and receipt for dues to the late
firm.

STRAY HORSE TAKEN UP
State of Arkansas,
County of Madison,
Richland Township,
Pursuant to an order to us directed, we have viewed a stray horse, shown
to us by Levi Sanders, and do find the same to be a dark bay, black
mane, tail, and legs, about five feet one or two inches high, eight or
nine years old, has been cut in the left shoulder, some small saddle
marks, supposed a Rigeolar; appraised to fifty-five dollars, 1st day of
October 1838.

IN CHANCERY
ON this day comes the complainant, by his solicitor, and it appearing to
the satisfaction of the court, that William Roberts, one of the
defendants in this case, is not a resident of this State, on
complainant's motion, it is ordered by the court, that the said
defendant William Roberts, appear before this court, on the first day of
the next term thereof, to be holden on the third Monday of April, A.D.
1839, then and there to answer unto the bill of complaint in this case,
and that a copy of this order be published for six weeks successively in
the Arkansas State Gazette, in such manner that the date of the last
publication thereof shall be at least thirty days previous to the first
day of the said April Term of this Court, and that the same shall be
unto the said defendant a sufficient summons; and that this case be
continued.

the disposable means of the Principal Bank, from and after the first

P. HANGER & co. would respectfully inform merchants, traders, and the
public generally, that they have selected this place as a permanent
location for transacting a general wholesale and retail business in Dry
Goods, Groceries, Produce & c, and that they will receive by the first
rise of water, from the eastern cities and manufactories, via New
Orleans, an invoice of merchandise, amounting to near $70,000, all of
which will be sold either at wholesale or retail on liberal terms. This
stock embraces a more general assortment of staple and fancy Dry Goods,

IN CHANCERY
On this day came the complainant by his solicitor, & it appearing to the
satisfaction of the court that Calvin Slover, one of the defendants in
this case is a non-resident of this State, on Complainant's motion, it
is ordered by the court, that the said defendant Calvin Slover appear
before this court on the first day of the next term thereof, to be
holden on the third Monday of April, A.D. 1839, then and there to answer
unto the bill of complaint in this case, and that a copy of this order
be published for six weeks successively in the Arkansas State Gazette,
in such manner that the date of the last publication thereof shall be at
least thirty days previous to first day of the said April term of this
court, and that the same shall be unto the said defendant a sufficient
summons; and that this case be continued.
