Field Music

Each regiment had a fife and drum corps that provided the cadence while on the march.  Drums without fifes were used to communicate the officers' commands, in camp, on the march, and in battle.  Every day dozens of different commands were given by drum beat, such as assembly, breakfast call, sick call, fatigue call, drill call, dinner call, retreat, forward, attention, etc.  In all, there were about 30 to 50 different drum beat commands that the soldier had to learn.
