Woodlawn House

aka William C. Johnson House

Old Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas

William "Major" Johnson met and married Sallie Hawkins in Fayetteville while attending school there. Sallie designed the house after one she had visited in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She named the house Woodlawn.

This 1909 photograph shows Sallie Johnson, her son John J. Johnson (who never married and lived with his mother until his death in 1918), two of her grandchildren (believed to be Aloyise and Johnny Wilson), and Tom Witherspoon. If you look close you will see a man and woman behind a column on the porch.
