Pioneer Cemetery

Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas

 


About the year 1826, John Miller, Robert Crittenden, Charles Kelley, and Richard Searcy verbally gave and dedicated this plot of ground to the town of Batesville to be used as a burial place. On April 5, 1856, the cemetery property, then called the Cedar Grove, was deeded to the town by Miller, John Ringgold, Jesse Searcy, William B. Searcy, Richard Searcy, Franklin W. & Elizabeth J. Desha, and Edwin R. McGuire.

Gazebo dedicated to the memory of Stevadson Allen Hail, Damon Duffield Dunkin, John Calvin Chumley, Martha Carolyn (Johnson) Allen, David Maxfield Strahl with gratitude to Harry E. & Richard Lewis, Citizens Bank and many other contributors. 1980.

April 5, 1848 - May 25, 1872.  Daughter of W.L. & Isabella Chiles of Alabama.
