History of the Weathers Family & Coal Hill

Coal Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas

1900's in Coal Hill, Arkansas

In 1908, Eveline died at the age of 75 or 80 years old. Eveline had been with the Weathers family since she was a girl. She had lived the last few years with Mary Susan. It is not known where she was buried but I think it was either at the colored cemetery south of town or on the hill above the bottoms.

The next few years Charley worked in the mines in the winter and farmed in the summer. Coal was used to heat with in the winter and wasn’t needed in the summer. When Charley worked at the Rafter mine he had to be at the mine at 5 in the morning. He had to get up early to walk to blue hill where the mine was located. In 1908, during a storm, lightning struck the schoolhouse. Again it burned down and had to be rebuilt. This time it

was built where the present school is today. It wasn’t completed until the fall term of 1909. The children got their education in houses around town. Different grades in different houses.

ThThe picture above is as the school looked in 1950, but is the same one built in 1908. The baby in the picture is Rebecca Weathers. This picture was taken in Celia Dickerson’s front yard. This is the schoolhouse where the fourth and fifth generation of Weathers’ went to school. This building stood until 1966, when it was torn down and the new

one built. The gym stood until 1972 and it was torn down and a new one built. At this time it was the oldest gym in the state.
