Charles and Edith (Harger) Weathers
On July 30, 1932, Charles Earnest "Pert" Weathers married Edith Harger. I asked Edith to write something for this book and this is what
she wrote.
The Manson Harger Family record. According to newspaper clippings of the Harger Family (Over 200) reunion held July 18, 1927, Manson Harger brought his young wife Mary Louis to Ozark, Arkansas by steamboat in the fall of 1869 and settled near the present site of Denning,
Arkansas. They cleared 460 acres of land, and were two of the
first people to settle in Denning. Twelve children were born to Manson and
Mary. My father, Robert Harger was married to Emma Alverta Dixon in December 1901. Eight children were born to Robert and Emma: Rufus,
Gladys, Louis, Henry, Evan, Geneva, Edith, and Robert.
I started to school at Greenwood, Arkansas. The school burned, I was transferred to Denning. I went through the
sixth grade, then to
Altus through the 11th grade. There was no 12th grade taught that year, so I rode the school bus to Coal Hill and
graduated in 1931.
This is a picture of the Pert Weathers family, taken in
1952. The store building in the top middle of the background was the store that Charley Weathers built in 1929. This also shows the back of
the barber shop, the cafe (the one Woody built) and the
theater. The little girl in the front row is Rebecca Weathers and the little boy is
Robert George. On the back row from left to right is Marvin Harold, Edith, Pert, and Charlene.
I had gotten acquainted with Vanis Hicks in school and on November 27, 1930, Vanis introduced me to Pert Weathers. This was our first
date. I thought Pert was a peculiar name and it was sometime later before I learned his name was Charles, but I could never call him
Charles.
On July 30, 1932, Pert and I married, then December 12, 1934, Charlene was born.
In August of 1935, we talked to Mr. Goodwin about buying his house. (Where Becky lives now) The only trouble
was he wanted $250 and he
owed $150 grocery bill to Pat Hunter. We had $80.00 in cash and robbed Charlene’s
piggy bank of $21.00 in buffalo nickels, then we agreed to
pay his grocery bill to Pat Hunter in payments. With this
house came and acre of land, two rubber tired wagons, an old grey mule, a cow,
hog, chickens, lots of corn, and stacks of peanuts in the garden. There were two old hens setting on eggs and several chickens hatched out.
Ma Weathers, Hoyt, and I traveled to Denning from Coal Hill in one of the wagons pulled by the old grey mule. It was such a
happy new
experience for Pert and I.
Marvin Harold was born in 1938, shortly after we built our 1st new home. Robert George was born in 1943 and
Rebecca was born
in 1947.
Charlene married Virgil Luebke and they had 3 children.
Marvin married Berta Johnson and they had 3 children.
Robert married Anita Hollway and they had 3 children.
Becky married Johnny Burke and they had 2 children.
We built a 2nd new home in 1948. Pop Weathers and Pert built and operated a movie theater in 1947. They
operated it for
several years
Edith Harger-Weathers
I would say that Edith pretty well summed up everything, however, I would like to add a few things.Charlene was born on December 12, 1934 and married Virgel in the early 1950’s. Virgel works for Channel 11 out of Little Rock, where they
now live. They had two sons, William Charles and Michael Wayne and one daughter, Linda Kay.
Marvin was born on June 24, 1938 and married Berta Johnson on February 24, 1961. Pert deeded Marvin 40 acres of land in the 1970’s and he
built a house on it. This land was part of the land that Vina inherited from Henry. Marvin’s three boys are named Robert Charles, Harold
Edward, and Gary Dean.Robert, better known as Bobby, married Anita Hollway on October 3, 1963. Bobby built a house on 40 acres of land Pert deeded him in the
70’s. Bobby was born on November 15, 1943. Anita was of a set of twins and their first-born was a set of twins, Cheryl and Darrel. Later on
they had another boy and named him Steven.
Rebecca Fern was born September 12, 1947 and her two girls are named Leslie Dawn and Kelly Lyn. |
