Walnut Ridge - 1919
From the very first, the town as steadily grown until today it is
the leading town in Lawrence County and of this entire section of
the state. Situated in Lawrence County, it is located in one of the
greatest agricultural counties in the sate. It lies in what is known
as the Black and Cache Valleys with the world's famous 36th parallel
of north latitude passing through the county. This line is known the
world over as the line wherein all the products reach the highest
perfection.
Walnut Ridge is located at the junction of three railroads; The main
line of the Missouri Pacific railway, the main line of the Frisco,
and the Pocahontas branch of the Frisco, running from Hoxie to St.
Louis and Chicago. These railroads give us the best shipping
facilities of any town in the state. We have a population of 3,000
and the neat and substantial character of the appearance of the city
attest the progress and the public-spirited class of her people. The
volume of business transacted by her merchants is not exceeded by
that of any city of equal size in the state, and all lines of
business and professions are strongly represented.
D. Bloom has one of the largest department stores in this section of
the state, as has also S.N. Pitzele & Co. Many other mercantile
establishments are along in their class and supply the town and
surrounding territory with the best of bargains. The city has two of
the strongest and most progressive banks in this section: The
Lawrence County Bank, which has passed the Million Dollar Mark, and
the First National Bank, which is also strong and safe bank. Her
manufacturing interests are strongly represented by three strong
cotton gins: The Phoenix Cotton Oil mill of one hundred tons daily
capacity; The Walnut Ridge - Hoxie Cotton Compress Co., one of the
most modern and largest in the state; large ice plant; saw mill;
brick and concrete yard; large lumber yard, modern electric light
system and electric car system, having a trackage of over three
miles, connecting the towns of Walnut Ridge and Hoxie, making a
round trip every thirty minutes a day and night, furnishing lights
for Pocahontas, Imboden, Black Rock, Portia, and Hoxie.
The city has one of the finest water and sewerage systems in the
state, furnishing pure water. Here is located the County seat for
the Eastern District of Lawrence County, with a fine $30,000
pressed-brick court house; fine $25,000 school building; five
churches, representing the Christian Science, Presbyterian,
Catholic, Methodist, and Baptist faiths with fine buildings,
indicating the high moral character of our people; opera house;
wholesale houses, ice cream and candy factories.
