Ashdown

Little River County, Arkansas

Ashdown is the county seat of Little River County and stands on a ridge half way between Red River and Little River, and in the east central portion of the county. It has a population of 2,000 people and has enjoyed a steady and substantial growth since it was founded in 1892. Situated as it is, in the center of a prosperous farming, timber and stock country, at the intersection of three trunkline railroads, it furnishes an ideal location for manufacturers, jobbers, and all classes of merchantmen; in fact it is now well established wholesale, jobbing, and manufacturing center. Excellent schools, churches, banks, etc., have already stamped this city with the mark of a future metropolis.

History
Ashdown was founded by W.D. Dupree in 1892, on land owned by W.T. Waddell. The first postmaster was Mr. Keller, and the town went by the name Keller for two years, when a fire destroyed the principal part of the town, and afterwards the name was changed to Ashdown. Some of the early settlers were: the Waddells, Duprees, Bishops, Allens, Coggins, Johnstons, Goolsbys, and Trailors.

Ashdown has 32 retails stores, 3 wholesale stores, 2 banks, 1 newspaper, 4 hotels, 5 restaurants, 1 oil mill, 1 cotton gin, 1 saw mill, 1 stave mill, 4 garages, 4 blacksmith shops, 2 grist mills, 1 creamery and bottling works, water and sewer system, and an ice and light plant.

Ashdown has four leading denominations: Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Christian. Ashdown is the headquarters for the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., Blue Lodge, Royal Arch, and Council Masons. The Odd Fellows and Woodmen also have thriving lodges at Ashdown.
