Battle of Brownsville

Lonoke County, Arkansas

N 34.48.919 W 092.52.773

Battle of Brownsville

On August 25, 1863, U.S. and Confederate Cavalry clashed near here.  The initial battle

involving approximately 7,000 men occurred east of the town.  After a brief artillery duel,

Col. Geiger's U.S. Troopers forced the retreat of Gen Marmaduke's CS force.  Marmaduke

formed new battle lines 6 miles to the west.  The Union advance was repulsed, but the

Confederates were forced to retreat in less than 3 weeks.  The Union advance on Little Rock

ended in success.  Lonoke County Historical Commission.
