"Brand New State!"
In 1890, Congress established the Unassigned Lands as Oklahoma
Territory. As lands in Indian Territory were opened, they became part of
the new Territory. "Twin Territories" came to exist: Oklahoma Territory
and Indian Territory. At a 1907 constitutional convention, the
territories created one government. On November 16, 1907, Oklahoma
became the 46th state.
