Sam Houston

General Sam Houston was a Visitor Here in 1830’s

Gen. Sam Houston, who had been a noted lawyer, governor of Tennessee and United States senator, and who at the time was a resident of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, visited in Little Rock in the 1830’s.  This was prior to his historic activities in the war by Texas for independence.  He had adopted the Indian dress and  habits, wearing an elaborate blanket when with them, as he did on his arrival in Little Rock.  However, he was immaculately dressed in the style of the day when he appeared on the streets.  According to Pope’s history, Houston entered the city riding a fine bay horse, with saddle and bridle of fine Mexican workmanship and ornamented with solid silver plate.  He was over six feet tall and well proportioned.
