John Josephus & Martha Jane (Clegg) McAlmont

Oil portraits in the possession of Mr. and Mrs. David & Linda Jackson.  David is the third great-grandchild of John Josephus McAlmont.

John Josephus McAlmont was born on Dec. 19, 1821 in Hornellsville, New York, the son of Daniel and Samantha (Dunham) McAlmont. He died on September 25, 1896. He was also one of the eight founders of the Arkansas Industrial University Medical Department, now the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

He married Martha Jane Gregg on October 22, 1845 in New Almond, New York. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and was the first mayor of Little Rock after the war in 1866, and he was a Little Rock alderman in 1867. He was on the faculty of the University of Arkansas Medical School. The town of McAlmont, Arkansas was named for him. The artist was either Edward Payson Washburn or Julia McAlmont, John's sister, who copied a painting of Washburns.  Either way, the paintings are very, very old.

Descendants of John Joseph McAlmont: David & Linda Jackson Sr., David Jackson Jr., and Martha "Marcie" Jackson.
