Top 144 Rich People
of Pulaski County in 1882 |
Local Wealth
Foundations of Many Local Estates Traced to Wealth of Fifty or More
Years Ago
There were no millionaires in Little Rock in 1882, in fact, none who
showed a taxable asset of as much as $100,000, but the Arkansas Democrat
files for May 13, 1862, show that during that year 321 residents of
Pulaski county paid taxes on an assessed valuation of $5,000 or more,
and 145 helped the public treasury by paying taxes on $10,000 or more.
The list in that year, taken from the records of the sheriff’s office,
and compiled by A.H. Fulton, was the first ever published, the Democrat
article stated, observing that “wealth is pretty evenly distributed in
Pulaski County.”
As was the case for several years thereafter, the Baring Cross Bridge
Company was the heaviest taxpayer – on an assessment of $200,000.
Several cotton oil mills and other factories would have rated as high,
but they were exempt from taxation by legislative enactment.
The largest individual taxpayers in 1862 were J.D. Adams, $80,550; W.B.
Wait, on an assessment of $76,065; R.L. Dodge, $69,600; Zeb Ward,
$64,411; and J.E. Geyer, $63,590.
Politicians and officeholders ranked well among those possessed of this
world’s goods. The list included: A.H. Garland, with an assessment of
$21,365; Elias Conway, $17,670; T.J. Churchill, $12,850; Anderson Mills,
$25,410.
