Notes on Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery outside
Jacksonville, Ark.
By Wm. Roy Bigger, Jr. March 2001
Marked graves:
Jesse William Boyd Pvt. Company B, 6th
Miss. Cavalry, CSA 2 Dec 1845-7 Mar 1891
Joseph T. (J?) Boyd Capt. Company E,
Miss. Militia CSA 21 May 1821-1 May 1876
Martha McGraw Boyd 1820 –1902 (Is wife
of Capt. Boyd & mother of Pvt. Jesse)
Unmarked graves: Many.
I am
convinced my gggrandmother Mary Smith Hill Wood, widow of James Hamilton Wood
and mother of James Dempsey Wood (buried in Bayou Meto cemetery) was buried
here in 1887. Also, I am convinced my grandfather Wm. Simril Bigger 1867-1899
is buried here, probably next to Mary. My grandfather’s casket had to be
weighted with stones to get it to go in the grave and Ebenezer certainly
qualifies on that geographical item
According to Mr. Virgil Johnson who
lives on Peters road near Ebenezer Cemetery: Mr. Johnson was born near here
1907 and has spent his life here; he lives on Peters Road near the cemetery.
Quotations not verbatim:
Ebenezer Pres. Church burned; last person buried in the cemetery about 1920:
“a teenage girl, I think”. “The
road used to have a different route”. The school was uphill from the church,
and the church was uphill from the cemetery; the church front door was
(downhill) toward the cemetery. Today (year 2000) there exists a concrete
well housing about 4’ high and 4’ in diameter, circular, where school children
dipped drinking water – the well was in the schoolyard. This structure is
about 10’ off the roadway, on the (north?) uphill side directly across from
the cemetery, and is easily visible from the roadway.
