Little Rock Arsenal
One attraction in Little Rock, the City Park, traces back to early time. The park was originally a portion of a government grant of 1,000 acres of land to Arkansas, to be sold and the money used for a territorial courthouse and jail.

In 1836, the government acquired the park site for an arsenal. It was then owned by Richard C. Hawkins, who had fitted it up as a racetrack. Though the government erected a number of military buildings on the area, it never kept many soldiers there until the War between the States.
