This antebellum structure was built in 1840 but in 1923 was
purchased
by the the
Catholic Diocese for use as a school.
There is a
two-story structure to the west of the house that is said to
probably be
the
original kitchen and servant's quarters. Fowler was a member
of the
first
Arkansas Constitutional Convention in 1836. His wife, Elvira
died only
2 years
after the home was completed. In 1875 it was bought by John D.
Adams, who owned a steamboat line.
In 1892 it was purchased by John
M. Gracie, who owned
26,000 acres of cotton, just south of Pine Bluff.
In the
1970's it was
rehabilitated as the Fowler Square Apartments. I am unclear as
to who
the
current owner would be? |
