North Little Rock - A Metropolitan City
Incorporated 12 years ago, North Little Rock today is a city of the
first class with an estimated population of 20,000. One of the prettiest
white ways illuminate the two principal business streets in the city and
is maintained by the city government. North Little Rock has more than 20
miles of paved streets, which have been used as a pattern for many
cities 10 times its size. Road builders from all over the country come
to North Little Rock to inspect its paved streets, which are said to be
the best in any city in the United States.
A sewer system that embraces the entire city was recently built which
given the city the most complete storm and sanitary sewer in the South.
North Little Rock owns its own municipal electric light plant and
furnishes residents and industries in the city electric current at a
cheaper rate than is charged in most cities. The city also intends in
the near future taking over the franchise of the water company and
municipally operate the water plant. Natural gas mains have been
extended to practically every corner in the city and natural gas is the
principal fuel.
Within five miles of North Little Rock, in the same county (Pulaski) is
located Camp Pike, which has been designated by the United States
Government as a permanent army camp site. During the war there was an
average of 50,000 men stationed at Camp Pike and at the present time the
camp is the permanent home of the Third Division, Fifty-Seventh Infantry
and other troops. It is believed that 20,000 troops will be stationed at
Camp Pike at all times. A paved street, connecting with the city
pavement extends into the camp and the trip from North Little Rock to
Camp Pike can be made in fifteen minutes. Regular trains operate from
the city to the camp.
Rich Farm Lands on All Sides of North Little Rock
North of Camp Pike and east of the industrial section of North Little
Rock lies some of the choicest farm lands in the South. Farmers and
planters from Pulaski and adjoining counties market their cotton in
North Little Rock and do their business with local merchants. Some of
the finest fleecy staple grown in the state is raised on the farm lands
of which North Little is the trade market. Some of the largest planters
of the State have large holdings near the city and cotton grown on their
farms brings the highest price paid anywhere in the State.
Truck planters also find farming a profitable business on lands near the
city. A ready market for all their products is found in North Little
Rock and Little Rock, and a number of large truck farmers are operating
only a few yards outside the city limits. A large number of orchards are
also located just outside the city limits. The fruit is brought to the
city and sold at wholesale and retail in large quantities. Large tracts
of land that could be converted into profitable truck farms and
orchards, located north of the city, are available.
A highway that will connect Arkansas and Missouri with paved streets was
made possible by an act of the last legislature. The highway will start
in North Little Rock and will result in farmers being able to market
their cotton in North Little Rock from any point along the highway on a
paved street. It will connect with the Faulkner County line at Conway.
The Faulkner Lake Drainage District also is draining 14,000 acres of
fertile land within a stone's throw of North Little Rock, which means
that $1,000,000 worth more cotton will be raised on this land and
marketed in this city.

A Fine System of Schools Has North Little Rock
North Little Rock boasts of one of the handsomest municipal buildings of

which stands as a monument to the efforts of the organizers of the city.
The city has one park, which is used as a children's playground, and
three other park sites, which the present city government plants to
convert into beautiful parks within the next two years. A large tract of
land lying in the western part of the city, which was willed to the city
for a park site, will be beautiful and made into one of the finest city
parks in the South. Two other large tracts of land, which have been set
aside as park sites, will be beautified in the near future.
