North Little Rock - An Industrial Center

Located on the north bank of the Arkansas River, within five minutes walking distance of Little Rock, is situated North Little Rock, one of the most prosperous of the many thriving communities in Arkansas. Its location as an industrial center is ideal and within its boundaries are located some of the largest manufacturing industries operating in the State.

North Little Rock is the home of the large repair shops of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, where more than 2,500 men are employed and where the annual payroll amounts to more than $4,000,000. The Cotton Belt, also employing a large force of men, has railroad repair shops in the city and operates repair shops in the city where cars are built and repaired. Besides these two big railroads, the Rock Island also runs into the city and operates a repair shop. Each of the three railroads maintain passenger stations.

Because of its railroad facilities, North Little Rock is the most ideal industrial center in the State. In the eastern section of the city, where most of the industries are located, the three railroads operate. The most recent of the large industries locating in this section is the McLain Arkansas Hardwood Lumber Mill. Within walking distance of this plant is also located the Ayer-Lord Tie Plant, Rose City Cotton Oil Mill, Buckeye Cotton Mill, and several other large industries. Each of these plants employs a large number of men and the annual pay roll amounts to several million dollars. Located in the city also is three large cotton compresses, Wilson Wrape stave Co., Union Seed & Fertilizer Company, and Crystal Ice Company and a number of large industries.

Because of its railroad facilities, natural gas, cheap electric current, paved streets that extend to all parts of the city, the eyes of the entire manufacturing industry of the South are upon North Little Rock. Every inducement is offered newcomers who desire to locate in & thriving, prosperous city.

North Little Rock - A Metropolitan City
Incorporated 12 years ago, North Little Rock today is a city of the first class with an estimated population of 20,000. One of the prettiest white ways illuminate the two principal business streets in the city and is maintained by the city government. North Little Rock has more than 20 miles of paved streets, which have been used as a pattern for many cities 10 times its size. Road builders from all over the country come to North Little Rock to inspect its paved streets, which are said to be the best in any city in the United States.

A sewer system that embraces the entire city was recently built which given the city the most complete storm and sanitary sewer in the South. North Little Rock owns its own municipal electric light plant and furnishes residents and industries in the city electric current at a cheaper rate than is charged in most cities. The city also intends in the near future taking over the franchise of the water company and municipally operate the water plant. Natural gas mains have been extended to practically every corner in the city and natural gas is the principal fuel.

Within five miles of North Little Rock, in the same county (Pulaski) is located Camp Pike, which has been designated by the United States Government as a permanent army camp site. During the war there was an average of 50,000 men stationed at Camp Pike and at the present time the camp is the permanent home of the Third Division, Fifty-Seventh Infantry and other troops. It is believed that 20,000 troops will be stationed at Camp Pike at all times. A paved street, connecting with the city pavement extends into the camp and the trip from North Little Rock to Camp Pike can be made in fifteen minutes. Regular trains operate from the city to the camp.

Rich Farm Lands on All Sides of North Little Rock

North of Camp Pike and east of the industrial section of North Little Rock lies some of the choicest farm lands in the South. Farmers and planters from Pulaski and adjoining counties market their cotton in North Little Rock and do their business with local merchants. Some of the finest fleecy staple grown in the state is raised on the farm lands of which North Little is the trade market. Some of the largest planters of the State have large holdings near the city and cotton grown on their farms brings the highest price paid anywhere in the State.

Truck planters also find farming a profitable business on lands near the city. A ready market for all their products is found in North Little Rock and Little Rock, and a number of large truck farmers are operating only a few yards outside the city limits. A large number of orchards are also located just outside the city limits. The fruit is brought to the city and sold at wholesale and retail in large quantities. Large tracts of land that could be converted into profitable truck farms and orchards, located north of the city, are available.

A highway that will connect Arkansas and Missouri with paved streets was made possible by an act of the last legislature. The highway will start in North Little Rock and will result in farmers being able to market their cotton in North Little Rock from any point along the highway on a paved street. It will connect with the Faulkner County line at Conway. The Faulkner Lake Drainage District also is draining 14,000 acres of fertile land within a stone's throw of North Little Rock, which means that $1,000,000 worth more cotton will be raised on this land and marketed in this city.

A Fine System of Schools Has North Little Rock

North Little Rock boasts of one of the handsomest municipal buildings of any city its size in the United States. At a cost of approximately $100,000, a new city hall was build and furnished less than four years ago. All city offices, city jail, etc., are housed in the new city home, which stands as a monument to the efforts of the organizers of the city.

The city has one park, which is used as a children's playground, and three other park sites, which the present city government plants to convert into beautiful parks within the next two years. A large tract of land lying in the western part of the city, which was willed to the city for a park site, will be beautiful and made into one of the finest city parks in the South. Two other large tracts of land, which have been set aside as park sites, will be beautified in the near future.

North Little Rock has a system of public schools that is not equaled by many cities twice its size.

A new high school was erected several years ago and today there is need for two additional buildings to take care of the overflow of children in the various schools. New buildings will be erected in the near future. The enrollment of pupils in the six city schools this year is more than 2,500. The city now has six large brick school buildings where all modern courses are taught. The North Little Rock Schools have an accredited standing with all Southern Colleges and Universities. Two Parochial Schools and Shorter College, a negro institution, also are located in the city.

The city officials, business men of North Little Rock and citizens are builders of a community that invites newcomers. A welcome hand is extended to everyone that desires to live in a city where its people are a harmonious set. Every new enterprise is welcomed and every inducement is offered them to locate in North Little Rock, where their efforts will be rewarded - and doubly.
