Kadel Cottage
c. 1860
The Kadel Cottage is one of Little Rock's few surviving examples of a
middle-class home built before the Civil War. George Kadel, builder of
the cottage, came to the United States from Germany. In the early
1840's, he settled in Little Rock, where he earned his living as a
Butcher. Build in 1859 or 1860, the Kadel Cottage, originally consisted
of just four rooms and a hall. Although its symmetrical design is
reminiscent of the antebellum Greek revival style, the decorative
brackets under the eaves of its roof signal the approach of Victorian
architectural styles.
