This house is very old and is described in The Agricultural, Mineral &
Timber
Resources of Saline County, Arkansas as described by Cutter & Nowlin
in
1884. The Arkansas History Commission has a copy of this pamphlet
and
there is a drawing of the house. The home was the property of
Professor W.S. Thomas and was eventually operated by his son Charles
Thomas. There is a rich description of the plantation in this
pamphlet.
So the house was built before 1884.
The information was also available
in "The Saline", the
publication of the Saline County History & Heritage Society. It was
in
the June 1993 (Vol.8 No.2) edition pages 55-69. You may purchase a copy at the Saline County History
&
Heritage Society's office in downtown Benton, 123 North Market
Street.
Their phone number is 778-3770.

This is the old Thomas house.
William Thomas and family moved here
from NY via Illinois in the 1880s, I believe, and owned a great deal
of land in this area. He worked as a consultant for the RR. The place
was called Midland Farms and was a showplace of agricultural
practices. A few years ago, the old barn was blown up as part of a
movie scene. The land has been divided between heirs. Most recently,
LR attorney Thorp Thomas owned the house and surrounding land, but
sold it all to developers last year. The house will surely be
demolished. It was indeed a showplace for many decades, but has now
been stripped of its marble fireplaces and fancy trims, its antiques
and original furnishings.
