The Augustus M. Crouch House, built about 1857, is located at Old Washington State Park in Hempstead County, Arkansas. The day down in 2010, it was open on display with a living historian.
Augustus M. Crouch
1821 – 1896
Augustus Crouch was a jeweler and watchmaker. He moved to Washington in 1842. He served as a Bugler in the Mexican War (1846 – 1848) and fought at the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847. He was also a member of the Washington Brass Band, and a member of the Mount Horeb Masonic Lodge.
He married Sophia Holt on August 22, 1850. Later, he purchased land near Washington and built his Greek Revival home in 1857. In 1980, it was acquired by Lucille Westbrook and the Pioneer Washington Restoration Foundation and moved to its current location. It was then donated to the state park. Today, the house is a vital part of Historic Washington State Park.
This is a wonderful display house. If you will notice this room has been split down the middle…restored on the left side, and original on the right side.
This is the house before it was restored…Wow!
The house is full of these wonderful display explaining early tools and construction.
