Odd Fellows Cemetery

March 9, 2011

I am just going to be truthful…I am now getting to the point where I can’t remember what I have and have not posted without looking it up on the website.  There have even been cases of wow, you found that on my website, really?

Somewhere around the year 2001, I drove all over creation looking for the Odd Fellows Cemetery in North Little Rock with no luck.  I think I ascertained it had to have been around the library or the North Little Rock detention holding cell across the street.  Anyway, about a month ago I went to go photograph the new North Little Rock War Memorial and found this memorial sitting in the corner of the Laman Library Plaza.

Site of Odd Fellows Cemetery
1891 – 1961
An early African-American Cemetery established by the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows.
Erected by North Little Rock History Commission.
I personally think a marker should be erected to every cemetery that is moved for one reason or another.

I can vaguely remember this cemetery. There has been some controversy over whether or not the graves were really moved, if they were moved, exactly where to, how they were moved. Several years ago, surviving family members raised questions on where, to, etc. I can’t remember the outcome of their questions. Urban Renewal was in effect for this area when the cemetery was moved…or not moved.

I know I looked high and low for it for the longest time and just figured there was nothing left of it. Maybe someone will pop up and let us know what happened to it.

Does anyone know where they were moved to?
