Civil War Battles: The Dishonorable Men Who Fought Them and the Weapons they Used

To celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, this seminar features an exploration of its soldiers, its technology and one of its lesser-known battlefield frontiers.  Dr. Lorien Foote will examine affairs of honor among soldiers and the pervasive violence that structured their lives.  Dr. Roger Pauly will consider the new technologies that changed the experience of war for the men who fought.  Dr. Buck Foster will explore the many battles and faces of Fort Smith, a city that changed hands multiple times during the war and experienced a constant influx of soldiers, refugees, runaways and deserters.

Tracing the Settlement of Arkansas
September 13, 2011 – 6PM-8PM
This lecture will demonstrate the archive of high-resolution images of historical maps of Arkansas currently being developed by UCA’s Department of Geography through a presentation of selected maps illuminating the evolution of the state’s settlement from the colonial period through the start of the Civil War.  Participants will be able to examine hard-copies of sample maps as well as learn how to access online the AR_Maps historical digital map archive.
