Two Rivers Bridge

September 6, 2011

Rivers, Roads, Trestles and Trails
Did you notice the change in experience from your walk through the park to what you see and feel here?
You’re facing the confluence of the Arkansas and Maumelle Rivers.  This can be a busy place.  Ski boats and jet skis accelerate engines and bop through the wakes of boats and barges.  Cars, trucks and semitrailers speed and rumble on top of a massive concrete bridge.  You may hear the clickity-clank of heavy metal on metal and the howling whistle of a train.
It is remarkable to think that less than 300-years ago only Native Americans knew this place, and they experienced it with a drastically different perspective.  Two hundred years ago it became a part of the fledgling country – the United States of America.  Today this is a busy place, and tomorrow is anybody’s guess.
As you look beyond Two Rivers Park, take note of how these man-made improvements separate us from contact with the land, possibly (not readable) our respect for it and our concern for leaving it in its entirety for our grandchildren.  As we change the land to accommodate our needs, let us do in a manner that preserves the richness and complexity of the balance of Mother Nature.  For it is this balance that soothes our souls, inspired our artists and writers, and sustains our livelihood.
