What's New in 2007

What's New Archives
April 27, 2007
Added the Arkansas Gazette articles for 1822.

As I am adding these articles from the Arkansas Gazette and I find one of them interesting, I am going to post them here.

Arkansas Gazette - May 1822

and then there is this one:

A NEW-YEAR'S WISH

ONE female companion to soften my cares,
TWO thousand a year to support my affairs;
THREE dogs and a gun when to sport I incline,
FOUR horses and chaise to indulge me and mine,
FIVE jolly companions with whom to make merry
SIX dishes each day, with six glasses of sherry;
SEVEN beds in my house for friends at their leisure
EIGHT something or other to add to their pleasure
NINE pounds in my pocket, when cash I require,
TEN favors are all that on earth I desire,
AND a passport to heaven when from Earth I retire

Added the Arkansas Gazette articles for 1821.
April 25, 2007
Yesterday, my boyfriend Mark retired from 20 years in the Air Force.  Congratulations Mark, Kyle, & Whitney and thank you for sharing your life event with me.

I am going to try and post the rest of the Arkansas Gazette for 1821 today, but don't hold me to it...I am feeling a little rusty at the keyboard today.

We will start with these additions and go from  there:

Alan Ginocchio sent me an old menu for the Brass Rail Restaurant....does anyone else have a pic or information on it?  The location is not even listed on the menu.

Added the Hot Spring County Court House and War Memorial in Malvern and the City Hall.  I was going to do more but got rained out.

On a footnote, I have a beef and I am just going to go on and get it out of my system....I have photographed well over 100 war memorials now, the entire Little Rock National Cemetery, and several Confederate cemeteries, and it just chaps me to see a marker or memorial where an organization lists every Tom, Dick, and Harry on a marker...like the Mayor, the Aldermen, the city attorney, and even the general contractors....then as a final footnote...dedicated to the Veterans of World War II, or Korea, or Vietnam.  I guess it is someone's way of getting their name on a marker...hey lets do a War Memorial.  Excuse me...if you want to be honored, join the service and put your butt on the line.  Stepping off my podium now.

April 23, 2007
Teresa Harris sent me a link for a very interesting story on the Maud Crawford mystery and disappearance down in Ouachita county.  Maud Crawford.

Lots of updates today...stay tuned.

April 20, 2007
Thanks to Sandra Floberg for pointing out that I had the Herman Davis Memorial in the wrong town....it belongs in Manila, Arkansas.

Added to the Arkansas Gazette project 1820 - July, August, September, October, November & December

I only photographed this park because it had a memorial park.  I have no idea who the Butlers are but if you do, please feel free to enlighten me.  Butler Park in Little Rock.

Old Drug Store in Pine Bluff

 Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas

April 19, 2007
Evelyn Brown sent me the following info on the unknown house in Perry County - This old house on Hwy 60 in Perry County was the home of the McNeal family. Mr. McNeal was a representative in the state legislature from Perry County in the late 1930s and early 1940s.  Can anyone add to that?  I am still looking for info on the unknown Bigelow building too while you are at it.

Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas
Henry Marx Company - Pine Bluff, Arkansas

I have decided to put my Arkansas Gazette work online free in stages starting with 1819.  Please do not email asking me to put up other years, I am only one person and will do it as I have time but it is my intention to put free online the articles from 1819 - 1850.  Please do not repost my hard work anywhere else online.  You may use up to five articles for your online website or book with credit back to Arkansas Ties.  Anything else will need to be worked out with me.

Arkansas Gazette - 1819, 1820 - January, February, March, April, May, June

This is for Bill in Florida.....David O. Dodd Memorial

I had a rough lunch, can you tell?

Added a 1918 article on Arkadelphia located in Clark County.

Pine Bluff has some really nice murals depicting their history.  This could be a really nice town if they worked on cleaning up what the visitor sees when they drive through.  Here's an idea....with one of the highest crime rates in Arkansas...kill two birds with one stone and put those criminal butts to work ....yes I am a proponent of chain gangs, but I do love the murals.  Very nice.  One | Two | Three | Four | Five

Oh AND move this sign.  The Chief is behind the sign.

 Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas

Added the following in Jefferson County:

Mr. Roy in Oklahoma posted this picture of the Greene County Court House in Paragould, minus the clock tower.  Court House

Greene County, Arkansas courthouse in the 80's, originally uploaded by mrroyok.

April 17, 2007

First Hotze House - National Register of Historic Places, originally uploaded by dsimmons2006.

This picture was taken by David Simmons, a friend from www.flickr.com.  I am going to try and add some more of his pics. A lot of great photographers are adding stuff on Arkansas to flickr, check it out if you like to tote a camera around and want to network with like-minded people. You can get to it by clicking on David's pic.

Keith Vincent has a wonderful website at: http://courthousehistory.com/html/collection.htm  Lots of great postcards and he all of Arkansas covered.

I have been having a rough couple of weeks so hang in there with me as I try to get the rhythm going again.  Oh, a few prayers my way wouldn't hurt either.

Added new pics to the Jefferson County Court House pages.

Added the following in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas

April 13, 2007
Elizabeth James with the Arkansas Preservation Program was kind enough to send me her notes from the "Sandwiching in History" program on the First Hotze house.  I have added them in case anyone was interested in the house.  Thank you Elizabeth, I am sure quite a few people will find the info interesting.  This was the second program that I attended and I am looking forward to the one next month at the "Ten Mile House."

I am afraid that with everything going on this week, I deleted 200 pictures and most of what I was going to post this week.  That is so irritating too.....guess I will just have to go take some more.  ;)

 605-1

David Simmons took this picture of the Sod Collier house at Tyler Bend...he has more info and history on it at: Sod Collier Homestead

Added a pretty boring article on the Arkansas Federation of Women's Clubs, but it does list several people in it from 1918.  It would seem that clubs were very serious business back then.

April 12, 2007
Added a page for the Arkansas Gazette employees of 1918.
April 11, 2007
Added in Perry County, Arkansas

Kim McKinney sent me the best letter on the history of the Looney - French house in Randolph County.  I have posted it on the page for anyone interested.  It was nice to know (especially since I walked at least a mile and back to photograph that old house) that someone liked it.

Added in Pulaski County, Arkansas:

Linda Hatcher sent me word that Cato has their decoration day on  the 1st Sunday in June and Sumner's is on Memorial Day.  Should be easy enough to remember.

I guess I am confused and need someone to line me out.  The sign next to the Beaver Bridge in Carroll County says Table Rock Lake.  The listing for Beaver Bridge on the National Register says it is on the White river?  Drop me a line if you know the technical answer to this.  ArkansasTies@ArkansasTies.com.

St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church

This is a family pic of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church taken during the 60's.  Maybe my kids will go photograph it again in another 40 years.  You can see the now pics here - St. Elizabeth.  There have actually been some changes to it over the years...the roof changed, the small arched windows have been enclosed.  Originally there was a statue of Christ  inside and now it is a statue of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.  Would be interesting if anyone else has old pics of it?  Pat do you have anything in your treasure chest up there?

This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to go out to the Hanger - Ratcliffe Gin and House and photograph it thanks to Mary Ratcliffe and her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Koehler.  Kathy and Steve were so kind to show us around and share some of the history on this place.  It is a wonderful old place and if I was Oprah Winfrey I would have wrote them a check on the spot to help with the place.  This place is not open to the public and can only be seen from the road in the winter time.  Gin  |  House

Wilma sent me an ID for an unknown house in Jonesboro.  She said it belonged to an attorney named McAdams.  So McAdams is better than "Unknown."

Working on Mississippi County (which I am going to try and wrap up by tomorrow) I have added:

 Mississippi County Court House

The way it should be at every public facility.

Craighead County, Arkansas

First thing going on today....my email is being bombarded with spam, to the tune of 80 emails every 2 minutes, so if you don't hear from me, please resend.  I am trying to weed out the real mail from the spam but might miss some in there.

Next thing, Jim Sanders sent me a link for his Baseball site - www.hellobaseballfans.com.  He is up around Fort Smith and I thought just maybe I had some baseball fans out there.  Of course, he would get more brownie points if he was a Traveler's fan but he is stuck on the Orioles......hmphf!  :)  He did say he would send some pictures from up that way, so we shall see what he comes up with.

Back to Craighead County:

  •   C.C. "Pop" Craven's Oak Tree on the ASU Campus <---who was he?
  •   St. Francis River Bridge
  •  Black Oak <--not much here now, but maybe it will be fond memories for someone from there
  •  Monette - This is a little tour of the town but I am mainly interested in the dance hall. It was  THE happening place Saturday night.  The picture is from Sunday morning.  If I hadn't been so tired, I would have went in and checked it out.  Who knows who might have been there.  Couple blocks off the beaten path, but everyone and there mother was there and it sounded like they were having a great time.  Anyone know the name of the place or go there?  Oh and just in case you didn't notice it.....Monette is a "Dr. Pepper" town.

Happy Barn

Starting in Mississippi County, Arkansas:

 The Epitome of Country

Both of these barns are in Mississippi County, Arkansas

March 21, 2007
Starting in Craighead County we have:

and the Hattie Caraway Memorial <---amazing sign of the times.  First female Senator, a whole list of accomplishments, and they actually put on the memorial "a Good Southern Wife."  I guess that means she was "bringing home the bacon and frying up in a pan."  Yes... the marker was from the 70's.  :)

 Jonesboro, Arkansas

ASU Pipe Man in Jonesboro, ca. 1972

Added the following in Jonesboro:

Jonesboro, Arkansas

I am sure it won't be too much longer and that "Smoking" will be covered up or replaced when Jonesboro starts to become politically correct.  :)  I just wonder what the "Standard of the World" was?

Blessed Sacrament Church

Blessed Sacrament Church

March 20, 2007
I found the following in Marked Tree:
  •  War Memorial, First Methodist Church, Building Mural, Delta Area Museum.

In Lepanto, Arkansas:

I seriously think this is one of the best things I saw all weekend.  Tribute to James R. "Jimmie" Hendrix, painted by Dale Case in Lepanto. Mr. Case also painted the turtles on the building in downtown Lepanto....has he painted anything else?  I would drive out of my way to go take a picture.  He is supposedly over in Gosnell now and Hendrix (Medal of Honor - Battle of the Bulge) is in Florida....living the good life I hope.  Loved it.

I was passing through Cross county (its on the list to go back to) and photographed

March 19, 2007
I have lots to load up this week.  My travels took me through Cross, Poinsett, Craighead, and Mississippi Counties.
March 16, 2007
Alan Ginocchio has his new website up - Thru My Eyes Only.  His interpretive photographs are especially good of local houses.

Added a new page for William Savin Fulton, Governor of the Territory of Arkansas.  The Tribute of Respect published in the Arkansas Gazette is an interesting look at the respect death was given in the early 1800's.

Added Charles P. Bertrand, Editor and Publisher of the Arkansas Advocate.

March 15, 2007
Added some new people to the "People" list:
March 14, 2007
Linda Hatcher sent me the following cemetery decoration days.  If you have family buried at these cemeteries, these would be the days to go visit, tidy the graves, and chat with living family.
  • Bayou Meto will May 6, 2007

  • Mount Pleasant will be May 12 & 13

Added the following in Greene County, Arkansas

Paragould Mural

David Simmons sent me the following trivia on Walnut Ridge, which I found interesting:

Good morning, Pris! I enjoyed your shot of the Iron Mountain Depot in Walnut Ridge on Arkansas Ties. It reminded me of the time my parents took me there in 1988 to see Michael Dukakis deliver a presidential campaign speech. If memory serves, Iron Mountain in Walnut Ridge and Union Station in Little Rock are the only active Amtrak stops in Arkansas. David

March 13, 2007
Added the following in Faulkner County, Arkansas:

Shirley Manning dropped me a line and told me I had the Lum & Abner store in the wrong county....so I moved it over to Montgomery County.  Hey...it happens! Second place in 5 years I have been caught putting in the wrong place.  Just testing to see if anyone is watching me.  ;)

Mark Dodson sent me a couple of pics for the Wye Daffodil Festival and St. Boniface Church to add to those pages.  To everyone that has been sending me stuff lately, thank you.....I love looking at other peoples stuff and getting a new perspective, so I am sure other people do too.

Added the following in Clay County, Arkansas:

Carolyn Depp - cg.depp @ roadrunner.com has sent me some info to post on the Clover Bend Historic District in Lawrence County and the possible origins of the name Dardanelle.

This morning I got a letter from Shirley Manning with a link to her website....Wow!  It only runs on Explorer 7.0 but if you can get to it, its pretty, pretty, good.  She has a little bit of everything...Montgomery County, Polk County.....I am STILL digging.  I did not have Explorer 7 so I had to go upgrade to check it out.  I hate software that is not backwards compatible, but since I have been a victim of it too....I am not saying anything.  They don't tell you this when you buy the software.

Anyway, back on track, here is the link:

Added the following in Randolph County, Arkansas

Finally, moving over to Greene County, Arkansas

  •  Crowley's Ridge State Park....very nice, I enjoyed camping there and will probably go back in  two weeks.
  •  Shiloh Cemetery, burial place for Benjamin Crowley's and other settlers is located here, inside the Crowley's Ridge State park.

March 8, 2007
Cindi Barnes has contributed some great pics and info on the Sandlin - Pate log house in Montgomery County. Located in the town of Silver, it was built by Obadiah Sandlin and rebuilt by her gr-gr-grandfather James Pate .  Both the town and the house are now gone.  Thanks Cindi!

I am still adding stuff from my weekend trip, but wanted to thank my sister, Tina Ward for helping me find all these wonderful places I got to photograph.  Would be nice to have an "insider" in every county.  Thanks Tina and Jack!

Added the following in Randolph County

March 6, 2007
Added:

Added a house, maybe the Smith House in Walnut Ridge?  If anyone knows the name of it let me know.  It has one of those wonderful little campfire stories to go with it.  Same thing on that, if you have more info on it, let me know. - Pris

Added in Randolph County:

March 5, 2007
I have lots to add this week for Lawrence, Randolph, Greene, & Clay Counties.  I was able to photograph all of the National Historic Register properties for Lawrence County, and most of them for the other three counties. If you have info or something you want to add, drop me a line at ArkansasTies@ArkansasTies.com

Added:

So I am driving through the alleys in Walnut Ridge and I happen across this cemetery in the backyard/alley of a house.  Whoaaa....I throw on the brakes and get out to inspect...no way I can just keep going. Imagine that...a tiny little cemetery in town in someone's back yard.  The markers are all thrown aside, this way and that.  The first one is for Dan Drakulich, World War I & II, (1896 - 1976.)  I get to the second marker, sorry I don't remember the name but it says, "so and so" was hung as a witch.    I look at the next marker and it has something crazy on it too.  I am like... what in the world.....finally looking at the house, I see a little sign that says "haunted house."  ***Rolling my eyes***  Hope that gives everyone a little chuckle.  Told ya'll I was too nosy for my own good.

Ok, back to work here.....

Added:

This is a non-discriminating site....interesting or borrrrrrinnnnnng....Old Highway 67, which by the way is listed on the National Register.  Doesn't do anything for me, but maybe it floats your boat.

Added:

I have about 5 or 6 more places in Lawrence County, but this is all I can stand to do today.  More tomorrow and then I will start on Randolph County. - Pris
