What's New in 2008

What's New Archives

April 29, 2008
Last night I had the pleasure of attending a presentation by "Miss Ellie", aka Ellen DiMaggio at the Heritage Seeker's Club meeting in North Little Rock.  She is a living historian who specializes in reenacting a Woman's role during the Civil War.

A few links for you...

Speaking of Ladies.... -  contains a list of Miss Ellie's programs & presentation engagements

Miss Ellie's Emporium - these photographs do not do justice to her dress creations.  If you are looking for period dress for reenactments or just because, this is the place to go.

Also, she has compiled a list of Civil War Veterans from Chicot County with a little info on each one.

Editor's podium today.....Have we really got anywhere in the world of history on the internet... transcribing  and posting info only to find it gone tomorrow because someone died or didn't pay the internet hosting bill?

Years ago, I resisted the flow of posting on USGenWeb & other "free" portals by starting my own website and actually paying for it.  The site has evolved over the years with me trying different things to design Arkansas Ties as sustainable after my death so that there would be no loss of information.

The internet being much like the offline world, leads us to wonder...who is going to inherit your family history stuff?  Will they keep it, share it, or throw it out with the trash?  Will they even have the passwords or knowledge to carry on where you left off?

While I don't have it at 100% yet (I would like to eventually have all of the grave photographs online at the click of a button), I do feel I have it to the point where the advertising revenue (electronically deposited) is sufficient to cover the expenses (electronically deducted) and  the website will keep rolling with or without me as long as the three international companies I use do not go belly-up.

I see a lot of websites asking people to contribute this or that, sometimes asking for hours and hours of hard transcription work.  The only websites I have ever seen maintained after the death of a webmaster (except those with a computer guru to inherit it) are those posted on the geocities website or sucked in by Ancestry.com.

The point of me writing this is, once again, with a new site, I have received email asking me to submit info to a new website for Arkansas. This site has the potential to be awesome but I find it registered to a design firm, which means if the bill is not paid the website could be deleted.  The site also has no source of  revenue so unless someone puts a large amount of money in a trust for it, all of the user-submitted hard work is in jeopardy of being lost.

I think most of us worry about our written collections but shouldn't we also be worried about our digital collections and asking these questions, now, BEFORE we lose it all?

I am open to discussion on the topic of maintaining a sustainable website with little or no user intervention, if at all possible.  Have ideas or thoughts on it? Drop me a line:  Pris - ArkansasTies@ArkansasTies.com

We stopped at Shady Lake Dam & Falls in Montgomery County (right there on the line, correct me if I am wrong..  Very, very, nice

On the way there we saw the Notta Lotta Cattle Ranch in Howard County.  ;)

A book I just ordered thanks to Wenzel Clark is the "Arkansas Historical Markers" by the Daughters of the American Revolution.  They have a few of these left on sale with tag, title, & license for $15.00

After reading this book, I find I am seriously lacking a lot of markers that need to be photographed.  It not only includes photographs of the markers but the stories behind them.  You can order yours by sending a check to:
