1919 Look at Woodruff
County

Court House, Cotton Plant
The Southern District of Woodruff County has
the following towns in it: Cotton Plant, Hunter, Howell, Wiville,
Fort Maberry, Dixie, and McClelland. All are thriving and
up-to-the-minute communities with schools and churches and many
other modern conveniences. Cotton Plant is the county seat and has a
population of two thousand, is the commercial as well as the civic
center of the district. Soft drinking water, consequently as fine a
place to live as can be found in Eastern Arkansas. All religious
denominations are represented. A public school system second to
none. People are friendly and hospitable, as is characteristic of
the entire district. Hunter is in the heart of the rice and stock
raising section of the county; McClelland and Dixie are in the rich
valley of White and Cache River. No better farming section can be
found in the State. Wiville and Howell are in the pleasant upland
farming section and are vital places to the county.
Only lately has the stock growing interest been engaged in, and thus
a wonderful field is open to that important industry - lands are
especially good for it around Hunter and Fort Maberry. Two-thirds of
the lands are yet in a virgin state as reference to actual farm
products and are comparatively cheap and appeal to the modest
investor. Hard surface roads are accessible in every community.
Cotton, grains, both large and small, are specially adapted to the
soil, while gardens and all fruits grow luxuriantly. The entire
district is dotted with saw mills and wood-working plants, including
manufacturers of handles, spokes, staves, both slack and tight
barrel, with two of the largest veneer plants in the State.

Old house in Woodruff County, does anyone
recognize it?
