My grandfather was Samuel Presley Junkin. He owned and operated Granite Mountain Hospital for many years. I now live in New Orleans, but I'm very interested in the hospital and the people who were born there. There was a room on the bottom floor named for my sister, Blanche Ann, who died at six years old with rheumatic fever. I've spent many nights in the different rooms on that floor, including the night that Granddaddy died. I've written to this site before. Lots of memories come to mind. When Granddaddy died, his funeral was held at Primrose Methodist Church, across the street from the hospital. His cook, Fanny, was one of the first African-Americans to attend the church. She sat in the pew with our family. I'm very interested in learning something about her family and perhaps contacting her children or grand children. Sadly, I don't know her name and don't know anyone who does. Please contact me if you can help. If anyone has questions about my dad, Presley, or his two brothers, Chenault and Abner (Nook), please feel free to e-mail me and I'll update you. They are all gone now, but the families stay in touch. It seems so odd now that my grandfather's African American patients weren't allowed in the church but gathered on the hospital grounds and were able to view his body in the waiting room of the hospital. I remember that a lot of his patients paid with vegetables from their gardens that they left on kitchen steps. Last changed: 05/08/08 |
